Custom Kitchen Remodel in Lake Tapps | Transforming Your Space with Functionality & Style

Planning Your Dream Kitchen: How to Make Your Vision a Reality

Designing your dream kitchen is an exciting, yet sometimes overwhelming, journey. At Kochubey Homes, we believe a well-planned kitchen remodel should reflect your personal style while remaining functional and budget-conscious. Whether you’re drawn to sleek, modern designs or timeless, traditional looks, planning is key to making your vision a reality.

We recently had the pleasure of working with one of our Lake Tapps clients on the 18th St. Project. This was a full home remodel that took eight months to complete. The house, which had been abandoned for 10 years, was more than 40 years old and needed a complete overhaul. For our client, the kitchen was the heart of the home, and it was our job to bring her vision to life while also making sure the space was functional for her family.

Prioritize Your Statement Piece: Choosing the Right Focal Point

For our Lake Tapps client, the kitchen’s focal point was clear from the start—the backsplash and hood vent. She knew she wanted these two elements to make a statement, and we worked with her to choose artisan handmade tiles that would surround the hood vent and create a unique backsplash. This became the heart of the kitchen design, and everything else followed suit.

When you're planning your kitchen remodel, it’s helpful to choose one or two statement pieces—something that truly reflects your style and anchors the design. Whether it’s a unique backsplash, a custom-made range hood, or a standout countertop, having a focal point will make the space feel cohesive and intentional.

Budget Smart: Compromise Where It Counts

When it comes to remodeling, it’s important to know where to splurge and where to save. For our Lake Tapps client, the statement piece was the artisan tile, and she was willing to adjust the budget to make sure she got the countertop she loved. Together, we found a stunning countertop that fit her vision, and she decided to bump her budget slightly to make it work.

This is where the beauty of a clear and open budget comes into play. By focusing on the key elements—like the tile and countertop—and making adjustments on other items, we made sure the kitchen was both beautiful and functional without exceeding the budget. For your own kitchen remodel, focus on what’s most important to you. Do you love a specific material, or is there one part of the kitchen that needs to shine? Let those pieces guide your decisions.

Design for Functionality: Making Your Kitchen Work for Your Family

As much as our Lake Tapps client wanted a beautiful kitchen, she also wanted one that worked for her family. One of her main priorities was making sure the kitchen layout was as functional as possible. To achieve this, we used the classic kitchen work triangle—keeping the range, sink, and fridge within close reach of each other, ensuring the space would be efficient and enjoyable to use.

She also requested a large island where her family could gather around while she prepared meals. The island became a central part of the design, not only as a place for cooking but as a spot for her family to come together. In addition, we incorporated custom cabinetry with pull-out drawers and a Lazy Susan to make use of every inch of space.

The Trend: Mid-Century Modern Warm Tones

One of the most exciting aspects of this remodel was the design style. Our Lake Tapps client wanted a mid-century modern feel, but with a warm and inviting tone. We used natural wood tones and custom cabinetry to create a cozy, functional space. The goal was to design a kitchen that was not only beautiful but also timeless, and we made sure to incorporate warm tones that would complement the overall aesthetic.

This trend is popular right now, especially for clients who want a balance of sleek, clean lines with a bit of warmth and character. It’s the perfect style for a family kitchen—inviting, timeless, and functional.

Don’t Forget Lighting: Plan Ahead for the Right Illumination

Lighting is essential in any kitchen, and for our Lake Tapps client, it was no different. We made sure there was proper task lighting around work areas and added ambient lighting to make the space feel bright and welcoming. Proper planning of the electrical layout before any work began made sure we got everything just right.

Customization for Every Need

At Kochubey Homes, we love creating custom spaces that fit our clients’ needs, and this project was no exception. Our Lake Tapps client wanted a space that was both functional and reflective of her family’s lifestyle.
